What is a Health Coach and Why You (or Someone You Love) Need One?

Updated: Dec 7, 2020

What could you be doing that would make a significant improvement in your health and wellness? Eating more vegetables? Avoiding sugar? Exercising more? Getting more sleep? Drinking less wine? Are you doing it? If no, why not?

So many of us know what we could (and should) be doing to improve our health and wellbeing, but we don’t follow through on those things.

Why does this happen?

It happens because KNOWING what to do and actually DOING those things are totally different. How many times have you started a new diet? Joined a gym with a plan to start exercising but stopped going after a few weeks? Downloaded a health app, but then ignored its reminders and eventually uninstalled it? We make conscious decisions about what we want to do, but then our subconscious programming (our habits) takes over. We naturally resist change, even when a change might result in a positive outcome. It’s understandable. Life gets crazy and responsibilities at home and work pile up, and we are back to our old behaviors again. We stay stuck in the same patterns, the same bad habits, feeling stressed, exhausted, and unhealthy.

Then, the months, and sometimes years, go by, and we don’t even realize how much our health has declined.

But, there comes a time when we realize things must change. A time when gaining control over our health takes on a new urgency. Maybe it’s a scary health diagnosis or watching a loved one struggle with health issues. Maybe it’s the alarming statistics on obesity, cancer, and chronic diseases in our country. Or maybe it’s just looking in the mirror and realizing that we’ve neglected to take care of ourselves and we don’t like what we see.

When it’s time to turn things around and start a new health and fitness program, it can be difficult to know what to do next. The internet is filled with information and recommendations for healthy living that are often inconsistent and unreliable. There are diet plans and programs that eliminate carbs or fat, allow cheat days, or have you weigh everything you eat. There are blogs, podcasts, and apps for everything including calorie counting, strength training, relaxing, and more. Many have tried to improve their health with these tools and experienced a wide range of results. The truth is not every diet or exercise routine is going to work for everyone. Figuring out the right approach for you isn’t easy. Many factors go into finding the most nourishing diet, energizing exercise routine, calming stress-reduction program, and fulfilling lifestyle. Putting it all together in a way that makes sense and allows you to stay motivated, stick with it, and thrive requires support, guidance, and a personal touch.

That’s where I come in!

As a Health Coach, I can help you make sense of all the confusing and sometimes contradictory information. I can provide you with customized information that’s relevant to you and your individual challenges and goals, and most importantly allow you to ask questions and speak freely in a supportive environment. I am trained in the science of behavior change as well as nutrition and physical activity. I work to mentor, inspire, and motivate you. These efforts, along with our active partnership, ultimately lead to a more permanent state of change.

Here are seven signs you, or your loved one, would benefit from the help of a Health Coach:

1. You feel like something isn’t right with your health, but you’re not sure what it is.

In addition to consulting with your doctor, partnering with me can help you explore what you’re experiencing, get to the root of your imbalance, and find ways to help you feel your best again. From fatigue and low energy to weight loss and digestive issues, I guide clients to better understand what is off with your health and make sustainable lifestyle adjustments that have a major impact on your health.

2. You can’t stick to your health goals.

Most of us are more likely to accomplish our goals when we have support, guidance, and accountability. Whether you are having trouble tackling your cravings, figuring out how to add more vegetables to your meals, or finding the motivation to keep up with your fitness routine, health coaching can help you establish the structure you need to make progress toward your goals. Our regular check-ins will help you feel accountable for the health decisions you make in a way that is motivating and encouraging.

3. You want to improve your diet and lifestyle but you’re not sure where to begin.

You know you should be eating more vegetables and exercising, but how? I can help you navigate these changes and guide you through simply taking things one step at a time. As a certified health coach and person trainer, I can guide you towards an eating and exercise plan that works best for your mind, body, and spirit.

4. You’re tired of dieting, deprivation, and the frustration that comes with trying to lose weight.

If you’ve tried every diet and are feeling discouraged, I can help you figure out what’s not working. Achieving a healthy weight is about more than what you eat. I can help you lose unwanted pounds by addressing the lifestyle challenges that are keeping you from success.

5. Your doctor recommended you make lifestyle changes but you don’t know how.

If you have been diagnosed with a condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and/or high cholesterol, and your doctor’s treatment plan included diet and exercise and other behavior changes, health coaching can help. I can assist you to implement the changes to your diet and lifestyle that your doctor recommended that will, in turn, protect you against major health issues.

6. You want to be a positive role model for healthy living for the people around you.

Your priority should be to establish healthy habits for yourself. Through that process, you will inevitably become an inspiration for the people around you.

7. You’re looking for a more personal approach to health and fitness.

If you’ve searched the internet, exhausted all the weight loss and exercise apps out there, and found yourself overwhelmed and unsure where to begin, health coaching is definitely for you. I will help you create a personalized roadmap to health that prioritizes simple methods that will support you to find lasting health and wellness.

A personal health coach may seem like a luxury, but if you’re serious about living healthier, partnering with me could give you just the boost you need to achieve your goals. Think of the fees as an investment in your health - and before long, you’ll be spending less on doctors’ visits and unhealthy habits that add up over time. You’ll get control of your health and wellness without all the pressure of following the latest fads, reducing your guilt and frustration, and increasing your motivation. And you’ll start feeling great from the inside out, feeling confident with the happier, healthier, more vibrant you.

Whether you’re embarking on a total lifestyle overhaul or simply want to tweak what’s already working, my goal is to help you be your healthiest self and stay that way. Starting NOW.
